I was on my way to the airport listening to my iPod and checking messages on my smart phone only to think how far we have come from the days of the Walkman craze! I am not one of those techies that have to have the latest and greatest gadgets, but once I find something that makes my life easier, I am a convert for life. I now have an expectation that I can access my messages and data within milliseconds. When it takes longer, I get frustrated. This is carried over into every facet of my life, including how I conduct banking business and access timely information like mortgage rates and fees.

Mobile Banking has emerged as a powerful consumer business channel. According to the January issue of the Online Banking Report, “Mobile banking is expected to more than double this year to one out of every 5 online banking households.” Another study from 2010 by Berg Insight forecasts that the number of mobile banking users in the US will grow to 86 million in 2015. The same study also predicts that the European market will grow to 115 million users in 2015.

With the advent of technology and increasing use of smartphone and tablet-based devices, the use of mobile banking functionality enables financial institutions to connect with their customers and build deep relationships. Those companies that provide mobile technology for their banking and credit union customers will continue to help banks reduce costs, achieve new revenue streams and transform the way banks do business.

Mobile Banking is here to stay. I continually see new mobile banking services being launched and on a personal level, I have been busy writing and releasing mobile banking press announcements quite often this year. If you are not in the game and connecting with key customers via mobile devices you are missing a huge opportunity and may not be able to compete much longer.
